For beginners, it may be difficult to understand how it works but I’ll try to explain it as simple as possible.

You started creating a program. You did a lot of coding and all those research over Stack Overflow . You tested your program, it works! Now your boss or your professor approved your output, congratulations! But then they asked you to make it accessible online, push it live so that it will be accessible anytime, anywhere 24/7. Then the problem comes in. You might be thinking to keep your PC/Laptop online 24/7 and have it connected over the Internet. That’s costly right? That’s where cloud infrastructure providers comes in.

DigitalOcean provides super powerful computers, we call them servers. These servers are located all over the globe which are always online 24/7, connected to a very fast Internet connection, and is air-conditioned in a server room to keep those super computers working properly.

DigitalOcean allows you to rent these servers and install certain Network Operating Systems (NOS) for you to access them online. When running NOS on these servers, you can create VPS (Virtual Private Servers) which they call them as Droplets or Containers. With that, users can remotely access these servers even if you are far away from them.

You use servers when deploying certain types of projects like: making your website online, hosting your online games, creating a private file storage, hosting your emails, create a VPN, and so much more.

The pricing depends on how much storage, memory and others specifications you need in order to run your application. For as low as $5, you can already acquire a server from DigitalOcean with the following specifications:

  • Memory: 1GB
  • vCPU: 1vCPU
  • SSD Storage: 25GB
  • Transfer: 1TB

The following are some NOS that can be installed in your servers:

  • Ubuntu
  • FreeBSD
  • Fedora
  • Debian
  • Centos
